Fabric Description:
BarriAire Carbon Shield™ Laminate FR Composite: Carbon Shield™ is a flame resistant fabric breakthrough based on carbon fiber technology. The fabric simply won’t burn in air. Besides providing outstanding protection against direct flame, the fabric exhibits low thermal conductivity – making it an excellent insulator against heat. Constructed using advanced patented technology, Carbon Shield™ knit fabric is gravure (dot) laminated to DuPont™ Nomex® Nano Flex, providing the ultimate level of flame, heat and particulate protection without sacrificing breathability or comfort. With a Particulate Filtration Efficiency (PFE) of 99.9% before laundering/conditioning and 98.1% after laundering/conditioning, BarriAire Carbon Shield™ Elite Pro hoods offer superb protection against dangerous and toxic particles routinely encountered while on a working call. Your fire hood is an investment in your health and safety, don’t compromise, BarriAire Carbon Shield™ Elite Pro hoods only from PGI.

Features

  • Innovative gravure lamination process, which covers only 50% of the material and supports improved air permeability and flexibility.
  • Compared to laminated PTFE hoods, which make a lot of disturbing crackling noise and muffled sounds, gravure laminated BarriAire Carbon Shield hoods allow excellent hearing without adversely affecting communication and situational awareness.
  • Nomex® Nano Flex barrier allows faster wicking and drying.
  • The pore matrix created by the Nomex® Nano Flex fiber allows moisture absorption 2½ times faster than PTFE laminates.
  • Less water retention and a higher evaporation rate reduce the likelihood of steam burns.
  • Excellent moisture management with approximately 9% to 10% moisture regain at 65% relative humidity (RH), which reduces the potential for heat stress.
  • The materials and lamination process create a composite fabric that is stable and has unparalleled particulate efficiency, comfort and protection.
  • Exceeds industry standards of blocking 90% of particles between 0.1 and 1.0 microns in size.
  • Built-in stretch and recovery, to better conform to the head and neck for true one size fits all sizing.
  • BarriAire Carbon Shield fabric has a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of 55, which is the highest LOI of all flame resistant hood fabrics. LOI is the amount of oxygen needed to support combustion. The higher the LOI value, the more flame resistant the material.
  • Unlike typical hoods that melt, stiffen and decompose during a fire resulting in liquid tar and an increased risk of burns, BarriAire Carbon Shield hoods do not melt and will never exhibit liquid tar.
  • Soft, supple fabric with excellent pill resistance.
  • Fabric is inherently static resistant.
  • Proprietary BarriAire Carbon Shield fabric achieves superior odor control through the combination of a PFAS-free durable water resistant finish on the exterior layer and a dual-technology antimicrobial and anti-odor finish on the inside layer to absorb and neutralize odors.
  • Excellent UV resistance and will not fade or weaken when exposed to UV rays.
  • Generous cut with a little “ease” built into the design so the hood doesn’t fit skin tight — creates a layer of air between the hood and head which improves thermal resistance from flame and heat.
  • Enhanced stitching, with major seams flat seamed stitch assembled.
  • Extra-long length front and back, ensures hood stays tucked‑in even after laundry shrinkage.
  • UL Certified thermal patch label facilitates tracking and identification through barcoding, sequential numbering and personalization.
  • UL Classified to NFPA 1970: 2025 Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural and Proximity Firefighting – Current Edition.

Particulate Protection
BarriAire™ Particulate Barrier Technology products offer more protection, comfort and value. BarriAire™ particulate products combine two layers of proven flame resistant fabric and a middle layer of ultra-lightweight DuPont™ Nomex® Nano Flex fabric which blocks penetration of 97.4% (BarriAire™ Gold quilted composite) to 99.9% (BarriAire™ Carbon Shield™ laminated composite) of harmful submicron size particulates. BarriAire™ Gold quilted composite fabrics recently achieved Viral Filtration Efficiency (VFE) Rating of 96.8% and Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) Rating of 97.9% (VFE and BFE testing as conducted by Nelson Labs, U.S.A.).
